Comprehensive recovery of nutrients and carbon from wastewater (RAHI 3)

The development of the RAVITA process and the study of the use of sludge char in the removal of micropollutants will continue in the RAHI 3 project (11/2025–10/2026), which is a continuation of previous RAHI projects. The project is divided into three subtasks, which will advance nutrient recovery technologies toward practical applications at Finnish treatment plants.

In the first subtask, a comprehensive wastewater nutrient recovery balance sheet and a preliminary cost estimate will be prepared for the Viikinmäki wastewater treatment plant. The second subtask continues to optimize the RAVITA process, developed for phosphorus recovery, on a laboratory scale. In subtask 3, the study of sludge char will be continued, and the results will be used to assess the suitability of sludge char for the removal of micropollutants from wastewater at the concept level.

The project is partly funded by the Ahti program of the Ministry of the Environment.
