METECH Project
In the METECH project (Measurement technologies and quantification of exhaust emissions from clean transport solutions), new measurement methods are being developed to monitor how new fuels and emission control technologies used in transport and off‑road machinery affect emissions and air quality. The aim is to ensure that new emission‑reduction solutions effectively remove both direct exhaust emissions and the gaseous and particulate pollutants formed from them in the atmosphere.
New engines, fuels, and exhaust after‑treatment technologies enable low emissions, but measuring these emissions is challenging—especially when assessing new emission components at very low concentrations in field conditions. The METECH project develops solutions for reliably measuring gaseous and particulate pollutants that are harmful to air quality and the climate. In doing so, the project supports the transition toward a pollution‑free future.
In addition to emission measurements, the project also includes air‑quality measurements in urban environments. For example, a measurement campaign will be carried out in the Helsinki metropolitan area to study the concentrations, sources, and characteristics of particulate and gaseous pollutants near the airport and major roads. The campaign will generate new information especially on ultrafine particles, the monitoring of which is now required under the new EU Air Quality Directive (2024). HSY will use the project’s results to further develop air‑quality monitoring and to support cities’ air‑protection work.
The three‑year (2026–2028) METECH project, co‑funded by Business Finland, involves the following partners: VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (coordinator), Tampere University, Finnish Meteorological Institute, Wärtsilä Finland Oy, Proventia Oy, Gasmet Technologies Oy, Dekati Oy, Pegasor Oy, Airmodus Oy, Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority HSY, AGCO Power Oy and Maurus Oy.
