Sortti collection vehicle accepts household hazardous waste in September–October

News releases 16.09.2026, 13:30

The schedules for the autumn Sortti collection vehicle tour have been published on HSY’s website. The Sortti collection vehicle will collect domestic hazardous waste at a total of 68 stops between 14 September and 19 October 2026. The tour is targeted particularly at areas where no permanent hazardous waste collection point is located nearby.

HSY’s Sortti collection vehicle will accept household hazardous waste from 14 September to 19 October 2026. There will be a total of 68 stops. The Sortti collection vehicle will tour Espoo on 14–16 September, Kirkkonummi on 21 September, Helsinki from 22 September to 14 October, and Vantaa on 7 October, 14 October and 19 October. More detailed information and timetables are available on the Sortti collection vehicle tour website.

– Proper collection of hazardous waste is particularly important, and the Sortti collection vehicle tour brings the service closer to residents. Even small amounts of hazardous waste accumulated at home should be brought to the Sortti collection vehicle so that they do not pose risks at home or take up unnecessary storage space in cupboards, says HSY's Operational Manager Joonas Enqvist.

What can be brought to the Sortti collection vehicle?

Most types of household hazardous waste can be brought to the Sortti collection vehicle free of charge, including paint, waste oil, expired petrol, cleaning chemicals, fluorescent tubes and energy-saving bulbs, unused aerosol cans and bottles, and nail polish.

– During the autumn Sortti collection vehicle tour, we accept only household hazardous waste. Unlike during the spring tour, you cannot bring scrap metal or waste electrical and electronic equipment to the collection vehicle. If you have a larger quantity of hazardous waste, such as a trailer load, it must be taken directly to the Kivikko hazardous waste station, which is located in connection with the Kivikko Sortti Station and is open on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Enqvist says.

What waste is not accepted at the Sortti collection vehicle?

Please note that the Sortti collection vehicle does not accept all hazardous waste:

  • Pressure-treated wood is subject to a fee for residents and must be taken to a Sortti Station.
  • Asbestos is accepted only at the Ämmässuo Sortti Station.
  • Construction waste containing creosote or other hazardous substances can only be delivered to the Kivikko hazardous waste station.
  • Large gas cylinders must be delivered to a Sortti Station or the Kivikko hazardous waste station.
  • Unused fireworks and sparklers must primarily be returned to the retailer or, alternatively, delivered to the police. Explosives must also be delivered to a location designated by the police.
  • Medicines must be returned to a pharmacy

Why is correct sorting of hazardous waste important?

Hazardous waste is harmful to both people and the environment. If sorted incorrectly, hazardous waste such as batteries, accumulators and aerosol cans can cause fires and other dangerous situations during waste transport and treatment. Hazardous waste must never be left in the environment, poured down the drain or placed in mixed waste or other household waste bins. Instead, it should always be delivered to an appropriate collection point where it can be handled safely.

Most household hazardous waste can be delivered free of charge year-round to HSY’s Sortti Stations and Sortti containers for hazardous waste. All permanent hazardous waste collection points can be found on the Kierrätys.info website.

The Helsinki Metropolitan Area Kierrätyskeskus’s collection vehicle also tours in autumn

The Helsinki Metropolitan Area Kierrätyskeskus’s collection vehicle will tour Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen and Kirkkonummi from 17 August to 28 October 2026. Residents can bring clean and reusable household items, clothing, textiles, as well as small electrical appliances and bicycles in any condition free of charge. The tour takes place during the same period as HSY’s Sortti collection vehicle tour, but the stop schedules differ. Detailed stop locations and timetables are available on the Kierrätyskeskus’s website.
