The waste management organised by HSY covers residential properties as well as municipal service properties, such as schools, kindergartens and social and health care services, in the Helsinki metropolitan area and Kirkkonummi.

Waste sorted on the property – waste management regulations
The waste management regulations for the Helsinki metropolitan area and Kirkkonummi apply to all residents of Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa and Kirkkonummi, and to other operators within the scope of the waste management organised by HSY. The waste management regulations provide information on the types of waste collected separately. In addition, the regulations include information on the requirements set for collection equipment, waste points, and waste transport and collection.
Mixed waste and biowaste are collected from all residential properties; plastic, glass and carton packages as well as small metal items are collected from all properties with at least 5 apartments. The expansion of the separate collection of biowaste to properties with 1–4 apartments will enter into force in stages (Espoo, Kauniainen and Kirkkonummi as of 1 July 2023, Vantaa as of 1 January 2024, and Helsinki as of 1 July 2024).
Mixed waste is always collected from municipal properties for administrative and service activities. Collection is arranged for 25 kg/week of biowaste, carton and glass packages as well as 15 kg/week of plastic packages. Paper collection is carried out in accordance with the Waste Act.
Mixed waste is always collected from municipal properties for administrative and service activities. Other types of waste must be collected separately if they are accumulated as follows: More than 10 kg/week of biowaste, more than 5 kg/week of plastic and carton packages, more than 2 kg/week of metal and glass packages. Paper collection is carried out in accordance with the Waste Act. Mixed waste is always collected from holiday properties.
The emptying dates of waste containers are available in the waste management online service. If you do not have access to the online service, please ask the property manager about the emptying dates.
If your small property does not have separate collection for recyclable waste, please deliver paper, carton, glass and plastic packages as well as small metal items to a Rinki eco take-back point.

Order waste transport services or make changes to your contract
Are you a new customer?
A warm welcome to you from HSY Waste Management. Waste transport should be ordered well in advance, preferably two weeks before the desired starting date of the service. If you order a rental container for your use, it will be delivered to your property within about two weeks. See Waste Management price list before ordering.
You will need to have the following information available when making the order
- Banking codes or mobile ID (private persons) or Business ID (housing companies, etc.)
Make changes to your waste transport service
You can make changes in our Waste Management e-service. In order to ensure your safety when using our e-service, we adopted strong identification on 18 January 2021. The identity of private customers is verified with banking codes or mobile IDs. Started from 23 June 2021, private customers can authorise someone else to act on their behalf in matters related to waste management. The authorisation is given in the Suomi.fi service.

In our e-service, you can
- review the current information of the property’s waste services, and
- make changes concerning, e.g. waste containers, collection frequencies, billing address and contact persons

- terminate waste services
- report change of ownership of waste services
- suspend waste transport
- extend the emptying interval of mixed waste to eight weeks
