Sortti collection vehicles to tour from 30 March 2026
The timetables for the Sortti collection vehicle tour have been published on our website. Starting from the end of March, Sortti collection vehicles will accept domestic hazardous waste, electric and electronic devices, and scrap metal free of charge in different parts of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and Kirkkonummi.
There will be almost three hundred stops in different parts of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and Kirkkonummi. The collection vehicles will be in Helsinki from 30 March to 25 May and in Espoo from 30 March to 29 April. In addition, the vehicles will be in Kauniainen on 20 April and 21 April, in Vantaa from 4 May to 1 June, and in Kirkkonummi from 26 May to 1 June. The exact schedules and stops and the stop map are available on the Sortti collection vehicle tour’s website.
“The collection vehicle tour complements the Sortti recycling services and offers residents without a car a free and environmentally friendly way to bring domestic waste to a collection point,” says Joonas Enqvist, HSY’s Operational Manager.
The Sortti collection vehicles accept three types of waste
Only domestic hazardous waste, electric and electronic devices and scrap metal can be brought to the Sortti collection vehicles.
- Domestic hazardous waste includes, for example, paints, varnishes, plasters, motor oils, petrols, solvents, corrosive chemicals, pesticides and batteries. Examples of everyday cosmetic products that are hazardous waste are hairspray, nail polish and perfume. However, not all domestic hazardous waste can be accepted at the Sortti collection vehicles. For example, the reception of pressure-treated wood is subject to a charge for residents, and it must be taken to a Sortti Station. A detailed list of types of waste that the collection vehicles do not accept can be found on the Sortti collection vehicle tour's website.
- Domestic scrap metal includes, for example, frying pans, laundry racks and metal furniture.
- Electric and electronic devices include, for example, washing machines, televisions, coffee machines, electric toothbrushes, telephones and computers. However, when it comes to smart devices, it should be noted that the information security of the devices cannot be guaranteed during the Sortti collection vehicle tour. If necessary, you can use an information security service such as Seiffi.fi to dispose of devices securely.
“The Sortti collection vehicle tour is aimed at less frequently generated domestic waste that does not have a collection container at the property or at the Rinki eco-take-back points. Metal waste that is too large for the existing containers can also be brought to the collection vehicles. You can turn to our Waste guide for sorting assistance,” says Enqvist.
All waste brought to the Sortti collection vehicles is recycled
Scrap metal and electric and electronic devices are reused as raw materials for new products. Some hazardous waste can also be recycled. The hazardous waste that is not suitable for recycling is rendered harmless during processing so that it does not cause harm to people, animals or the environment. Hazardous waste must never be put in mixed waste, down the drain or in the environment.
“Incorrectly sorted hazardous waste can cause serious hazardous situations. For example, batteries placed in mixed waste pose a significant fire risk in waste transport and treatment," says Enqvist.
Step-by-step instructions to the Sortti collection vehicle tour
- Sort the waste in advance into separate bags or boxes, as each type of waste has its own collection vehicle.
- Pack hazardous waste in their original packaging or in another intact and sealed container marked with what it contains.
- Sort the plastic bags and carton packaging used in transport into your household's waste containers or take them to a Rinki eco-take-back point, as there is no space for them in the collection vehicles.
- If you arrive before the collection vehicles, park further away and leave space for the collection vehicles.
- Wait and keep a safe distance until the platforms are lowered.
- The Sortti collection vehicles will stop at each reception site for 30–40 minutes, which means there will be plenty of time to use the vehicles.
- Hand over the waste only to the staff wearing HSY's yellow safety vests so that it will be treated properly. Waste must not be left at the reception site in advance.
- At some stops, a security guard is present to ensure that visits are smooth and safe for all users of the Sortti collection vehicles.
- For larger quantities of waste, such as a trailer load, take them to the Sortti stations.
The collection vehicle of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre will also be on the move in the spring
The collection vehicle of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre will be on the move from 30 March to 28 May in Helsinki and Vantaa. Clean and undamaged small household items, clothing and textiles suitable for reuse, as well as small electrical and electronic devices and bicycles, regardless of their condition, can be brought to the collection vehicle of the Reuse Centre free of charge. The tour is scheduled for the same period as HSY’s Sortti collection vehicle tour, but the stop schedules are different. For more detailed information on stops and schedules for the Reuse Centre’s collection tour, see the Reuse Centre's website.
