Sortti collection vehicle for domestic hazardous waste will tour in September-October

News releases 29.08.2025, 15:51
Most domestic hazardous waste, such as nail polish, aerosol cans, fluorescent tubes, energy-saving bulbs and paints, can be brought to the Sortti collection vehicle for hazardous waste free of charge.

Helsinki Region Environmental Services HSY will organise a Sortti collection vehicle tour for domestic hazardous waste from 15 September to 20 October 2025. This year, there are mainly stops in Helsinki and Espoo, and the vehicle will also tour in a few places in Vantaa and Kirkkonummi. The tour is specifically targeted at areas where there are no other hazardous waste collection points nearby.

HSY’s Sortti collection vehicle for domestic hazardous waste will stop at 68 reception sites this year. The collection vehicle will tour in Espoo from 15 to 17 September, in Kirkkonummi on 22 September, in Helsinki from 23 September to 15 October and in Vantaa on 8, 15 and 20 October. Further details and the stops can be found on the Sortti collection vehicles' website.

– We have planned the stops so that the autumn tour would cover as widely as possible the areas that do not have a fixed hazardous waste collection point nearby. This makes it as easy as possible for residents without a car to take hazardous waste to an appropriate collection point. Waste that is hazardous for the environment and health must never be poured down the drain, placed in the trash or tossed away in nature, says Maarit Kiviranta, Development Engineer at HSY.

What can you bring to the Sortti collection vehicle for hazardous waste?

Most domestic hazardous waste, such as paint, waste oil, expired petrol, cleaning chemicals, fluorescent tubes and energy-saving bulbs, unused aerosol cans and bottles, and nail polish, can be brought to the Sortti collection vehicle free of charge.

However, it should be noted that the Sortti collection vehicle does not accept all domestic hazardous waste. For example, the reception of pressure-treated wood is subject to a charge for residents, and it must be taken to a Sortti Station. Asbestos is only accepted at the Ämmässuo Sortti Station, and construction waste containing creosote or other hazardous substances can only be taken to the hazardous waste station located in connection with the Kivikko Sortti Station, which is open on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Unused fireworks and sparklers must primarily be returned to the seller of the product or, alternatively, to the police. Explosives must also be taken to a location indicated by the police. Medicines must be returned to pharmacies.

– We only accept domestic hazardous waste during the autumn Sortti collection vehicle tour. This means that, unlike during the spring Sortti collection vehicle tour, you cannot bring metal or electric or electronic devices to the collection vehicle. If there is a larger quantity of hazardous waste, such as a trailer load, it must be taken directly to a Sortti Station, says Kiviranta.
Most domestic hazardous waste can be delivered to HSY’s Sortti Stations and Sortti containers for hazardous waste all year round, free of charge. All fixed hazardous waste collection points can be found on the website Kierratys.info.

How can you identify hazardous waste?

Hazardous waste refers to waste that has a hazardous quality. For example, it can be combustible, toxic or dangerous to the environment. In addition to chemicals containing hazardous substances, different types of batteries are also sorted into hazardous waste collection due to the substances they contain and the fire risk they pose.

Some hazardous waste can be identified by the warning symbol on the label. Old packaging may also display previously used warning symbols on an orange background. More information can be found on the Hazardous waste website.

The collection vehicle of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre will also be on the move in the autumn

The collection vehicle of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre will tour from 18 August to 29 October 2025 in Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen and Kirkkonummi. Clean and undamaged small household items, clothing and textiles suitable for reuse, as well as small electrical and electronic devices and bicycles, regardless of their condition, can be brought to the collection vehicle of the Reuse Centre free of charge. The tour is scheduled for the same period as HSY’s Sortti collection vehicle tour, but the stop schedules are different. For more detailed information on stops and schedules for the Reuse Centre’s collection tour, see the Reuse Centre's website.
