Fine Particles Are Currently Deteriorating Air Quality in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area

Currently (25.2.), the air in the Helsinki metropolitan area contains more than five times the average amount of fine particles. Fine particles are being transported to Finland from Eastern and Central Europe at higher than usual concentrations. According to HSY measurements, air quality has been fair due to fine particles in the Helsinki metropolitan area and elsewhere in Uusimaa yesterday and today.
According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the situation is expected to continue for the next few days. However, fine particle concentrations in the Helsinki metropolitan area and elsewhere in Finland are significantly lower than in more polluted areas of Europe.
Fine particles are transported to Finland at relatively high concentrations from Eastern and Central Europe under unfavorable weather conditions. Typical sources of fine particle emissions include energy production, traffic, industry, and the burning of wood and coal in fireplaces.
During long-range transport, people are exposed to higher than usual particle concentrations over fairly large areas. When air quality is fair, health effects are unlikely. However, fine particles can cause health issues for sensitive individuals and exacerbate symptoms in those with respiratory and heart conditions. Exposure to long-range transported fine particles and related health effects can be reduced by avoiding strenuous physical activity outdoors.
