The Sortti collection vehicles accept three types of waste

The three types of waste are:

  • Hazardous household waste, including paints, varnishes, plaster, corrosive chemicals, motor oil, gasoline, solvents, fertilizers, and batteries. Cosmetics such as hairspray, nail polish, and perfume should also be sorted as hazardous waste.
  • Household electrical and electronic appliances, such as washing machines, TVs, coffee makers, phones, and computers.
  • Household metal scrap, including frying pans, clothes racks, broken bicycles, and other larger metal items. For fuel-powered appliances, remember to empty the oils first and dispose of them separately as hazardous waste. Note that electric sauna heaters and smoke ovens should be sorted with electrical appliances.

If your waste fills a trailer or van, please take it directly to the Sortti station. The acceptance of the mentioned three waste types is always free for household customers.

HSY’s Waste guide and the collection vehicles’ environmental advisors can provide sorting assistance.

Metal waste and electrical appliances that are left to the collection vehicles are recycled into raw materials for new products. Hazardous waste is made harmless by treatment, but some of it can also be recycled. Hazardous waste can cause harm or be dangerous to humans, animals and the environment if handled improperly. They must never be mixed with mixed waste or released into nature or flushed down the drain.

Additionally, the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Recycling Center’s collection truck will also be active from March to May

Residents in Helsinki and Vantaa can use this truck to drop off reusable household items, textiles, and various small electronics and bicycles. In the fall, it will be the turn of Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, and Kirkkonummi.
