Instructions for applying for compensation in the event of water damage to property
In the event of water damage, the property holder must immediately initiate drainage operations on the property in order to avoid further damage (e.g. removal of water with a suction truck, installing drainage equipment). The property owner or holder is obliged to participate in all measures to prevent and limit the damage that may reasonably be required of the owner/holder. HSY is responsible for repairing any leakage caused by HSY’s main line or removing any sewer blockage. We can also assist in initiating drainage work on the property. If HSY is not liable for the damage, the drainage and other such costs will be charged to the property.
If it is suspected that the flood water has entered the property’s structures, HSY will commission a damage survey at its expense.
Once the flood damage has been reviewed with a representative of HSY and the liability for the damage seems to lie with HSY, the handling of the matter will, as a general rule, be transferred to HSY’s insurance company. In this case, the loss adjuster of our insurance company will assess the damage and determine the repair measures. Damaged items must be documented either by yourself or with the help of the loss adjuster and must not be disposed of without the insurance company’s permission.
If the management of the claim has not been transferred to HSY’s insurance company, the injured party can apply for compensation from HSY by preparing a compensation application based on the damage report. The compensation application is a free-form account of the incident. It must set out all the facts relevant to processing the claim:
- information on the incident leading to the damage (time, place, cause of damage);
- damage caused (damage report and possible minutes of inspection);
- itemised information on the damaged movable property for which compensation is sought (receipts, photographs of damaged items, etc.);
- itemised information on the repair costs for which compensation is sought, as well as any other accounts to determine the need for repairs;
- inspection and investigation records (insurance company, police);
- bank details for the payment of compensation; and
- the claimant’s contact information.
The compensation application can be submitted by email or by post to the HSY Registry Office. HSY cannot guarantee a secure connection for information sent by email.
