Recycling methodsWaste Information
There are two types of thermometers that contain liquid.
1. Mercury thermometers can be delivered free of charge to
- a container for hazardous waste, Sortti Stations or HSY collection vehicles
- a pharmacy.
How to dispose of a broken mercury thermometer
- Take the mercury from the broken thermometer in a tightly sealed container to a pharmacy or to a hazardous waste container. Mark on the package that it contains mercury.
- For cleaning, you can use, for example, a brush and a dustpan. Vacuuming is not recommended because it can increase the vaporization of the mercury.
2. Mercury-free mechanical meters are mixed waste. Because mercury is poisonous, it is not used in modern thermometers, which instead contain e.g. a red liquid. The meter can also be labelled as mercury-free. The chemical symbol for mercury is Hg.
Digital thermometers are electronic devices.
