Clay-based potting granules used in flower pots should be disposed of with mixed waste. They are not suitable for the anaerobic digestion of biowaste in biogas plants. The granules do not break down during the process and may rise to the surface, forming a layer that can interfere with the operation of the biogas reactor.

What should you do if soil and potting granules are mixed together?

• As separating them is difficult, the most practical solution is to dispose of the mixture with mixed waste.
• However, soil containing potting granules can be reused in your own garden. If desired, potting soil containing potting granules can also be added to a home compost.
