We will renovate the underground water networks in Vuosaari, Helsinki, during 2027–2030.
In Vuosaari, the water supply of the renovation area was mainly built in the 1960s and 1970s, and it is about to reach the end of its service life. By renovating the poorly-functioning underground water networks, we will improve the security of water supply in the area and the operation of the sewers. The solutions we implement today must work for at least the next hundred years.
We will carry out renovation work in the area marked in the picture.
What will be done in the area?
We will renovate a total of approximately 30 km of water pipes, as well as wastewater, stormwater and pressure sewers in the Vuosaari area.
In accordance with our new operating model for plot pipeline renovation, and at HSY’s expense, we will also renovate the 20-40-year-old plot pipelines in the street area that fall under the property owner's responsibility and that are in need of renovation in connection with the main lines.
When will the renovation work begin?
The renovation work will be carried out in 2027–2030. We will inform you of a more detailed implementation schedule of the area renovation and the start of the work in early 2027.
Will the work affect movement or traffic in the area?
Every effort is being made to plan all work in such a way that it will cause as little harm as possible to people moving around in the area. We will carry out the renovation mainly using no-dig methods, which means that we will renovate water pipes largely without extensive excavation work. This means that less excavations will be needed in the street area and the work will cause less traffic nuisance, noise, dust and carbon dioxide emissions than traditional renovation.
Will plot pipelines be renovated in connection with the project?
HSY’s trunk network will be renovated in the street area. In accordance with our new operating model for plot pipeline renovation, we will also renovate the 20-40-year-old plot pipelines in the street area that fall under the property owner's responsibility and that are in need of renovation in connection with the main lines.
At the same time, we encourage property owners to renovate the plot pipelines outside the street area as well. The aim is to restore the renovation areas of the underground water networks in one go. The renovation of the property’s aged plot pipelines in connection with HSY’s contract will ensure the property’s high-quality drinking water and uninterrupted water supply, prevent damage caused by leaks or blockages, and reduce the need to open up street structures later.

Plot pipeline responsibility areas 1–3. A, B and C are the main lines for which HSY is responsible.
The following are under the property’s maintenance responsibility:
- plot pipelines in the street area (area 1 in the picture)
- plot pipelines in any public area between the street area and the property’s plot boundaries (area 2 in the picture)
- plot pipelines within the borders of the property (area 3 in the picture).

Will the renovation work incur any costs for me?
The renovation of the 20–40-year-old plot pipelines in need of renovation in the street area will be carried out at HSY’s expense.
For plot lines over 40 years old, the connecting party will be responsible for the renovation costs of the street area, EUR 4,000 per trench, which HSY will invoice to the property. Please note that the property’s plot pipelines may not necessarily be located next to each other, in which case several connection excavations may have to be made.
If the property renovates its plot pipelines of more than 40 years old within the borders of the property (area 3 in the picture) and takes care of any separation of stormwater in accordance with the requirements of the City of Helsinki, HSY will not invoice the property for the renovation costs of the plot pipelines in the street area.
The property may invite a tender on the renovation of its plot pipelines from HSY’s contractor, or it may use a contractor of its own choice. However, in all cases, the contractor must provide HSY with the documents required by HSY for the completed work at the end of the contract.
The renovation of the plot pipelines within the borders of the property (Area 3 in the picture) is an agreement between the property owner and the contractor, so the invoice for it comes from the contractor.
If the property decides to renovate its plot pipeline outside the street area, the renovation must be carried out as follows:
- stormwater sewer to the basic water well closest to the property
- wastewater sewer up to the property's nearest manhole
- water pipe up to water meter
