HSY’s brushwood collection makes spring cleaning easier for detached house residents

News releases 01.04.2025, 10:17
The collection is the right place for waste created during the pruning of trees and shrubs, such as brushwood, branches, tree trunks, hawthorn, rose brushes and coniferous litter.

We will once again facilitate the spring cleaning of yards and collect brushwood and branches from small properties in May. The collection is subject to a charge, and it must be ordered for the property in advance. We will also accept brushwood at our Sortti Stations.

We will organise the brushwood collection of small properties in phases from 5 to 25 May 2025. This spring, the collection is primarily intended for detached house residents in Helsinki, who will receive a letter from us informing them of the collection.

The collection must be ordered for the property in advance by 23 April at the latest. The ordering instructions can be found in our resident letter or at hsy.fi - Brushwood collection. The cost of the collection is EUR 80 per collection point.

–  People often do a lot of yardwork in the spring, which means that a lot of brushwood and branch waste is accumulated. We want to make everyday life easier for residents and bring the brushwood collection service to their yards. You can also order a pick-up together with your neighbour if you don't have enough brushwood in your own yard,  says our Operations Manager Juho Nuutinen.

Those living elsewhere in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area can also ask about the option of ordering the brushwood collection service. We organise the brushwood collection on alternate years in different areas in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and Kirkkonummi, and it is intended for properties with fewer than ten residential apartments.

Collect the brushwood in a visible place where it is easy to pick up

The collection is the right place for waste created during the pruning of trees and shrubs, such as brushwood, branches, tree trunks, hawthorn, rose brushes and coniferous litter. On the other hand, we do not collect tree leaves and other raking waste in the brushwood collection.

Collect the brushwood in one pile in a visible place on the border of the lot, no more than five metres from the road. One collection point can have up to 30 cubic metres of brushwood, amounting to one truck load. We will pick up the brushwood from the address of the property that placed the order with the waste service.

Please make sure that the pile of brushwood can stay in the same place throughout the two-week collection period without disturbing traffic or other road users. Please also check that there are no obstacles around or above the pile, such as tree branches or power lines.

We have been organising the brushwood collection since 2011, and it has been a very popular service. The amount of brushwood collected in the spring has usually varied between 300 and 600 tonnes per year. Last year, we collected approximately 250 tonnes of brushwood, which we utilised as a binding agent for biowaste at the Ämmässuo eco-industrial centre.

Brushwood can also be easily taken to Sortti Stations

We also accept brushwood and other garden waste at all our Sortti Stations, with the exception of the Koivukylä Sortti Mini Station. The cost of one truck load (max. 5 m3 ) is EUR 5.10 for households and EUR 8.10 for companies. Waste cannot be brought to Sortti stations by truck.

All Sortti Stations are open on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, the Konala and Ruskeasanta Sortti Stations serve from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In addition, all Sortti Stations will be open on three Saturdays in spring 2025: 26 April, 3 May and 10 May from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Kivikko Sortti Station will be permanently open on Saturdays as of 26 April.

The exact opening hours of all Sortti Stations can be found on our website at hsy.fi - Sortti Stations.
