Metal

Small metal items mostly include metal packages, such as food cans and aluminium tins. Larger metal objects belong in the scrap metal collection. Should your waste be sorted into metal collection?
-
1
Check the waste guide!
-
2
Assess visually whether more than half of the waste is metal. If so, it should be sorted into metal collection.
-
3
Make sure that the waste is not an electric or electronic device and that it does not contain hazardous waste.
-
4
Perform a crease test on thin material: If the waste tears easily and can be crushed into a ball without it opening back up again on its own, it is most likely mainly metal.
-
5
See if the waste fits in your housing company’s metal collection container or through the opening of the container for small metal items at the Rinki eco take-back point (approx. 20 cm). If not, it is scrap metal that can be delivered to Sortti Stations or to our touring collection vehicles free of charge.
Where to take small metal items?
- the metal collection container of the property
- Rinki eco take-back points
- Return deposit metal cans to the store or Alko.
Protect your hands when handling sharp objects. It is advisable to pack sharp and cutting metal items inside other metal waste, such as in a can or wrapped in aluminium foil.

What is metal used for?
Metal can be recycled almost indefinitely! The metal industry uses recycled metal as a raw material in the manufacture of new metal products. About half of the raw materials used to make new metal products come from recycling.
In the metal recycling process, the items are crushed and washed, and any other materials are removed from the metal. Different metals are separated from each other based on, for example, their magnetism, density and electrical conductivity. The processed raw material is delivered to the metal industry in Finland and abroad for use in the manufacture of new metal products. In addition to new metal packaging, recycled metal is used to produce shovels, bicycles and car parts, among other things.
