Annual clock for waste management

Public holidays falling on weekdays almost invariably postpone the emptying of waste containers that week to take place one day earlier or later. As a rule, we do not empty waste containers on public holidays. Containers may exceptionally be emptied on weekends. We always provide information on any changes separately.
Winter
Take care of the ploughing and anti-skid treatment of garbage truck accessways and container transfer routes. Also remove any snow and ice that has accumulated in front of the property’s waste collection point, as well as under its door.
Christmas tree collection
We collect Christmas trees in connection with the emptying of biowaste or mixed waste containers in January-February. We do not charge a separate fee for the service. Individual Christmas trees can also be delivered to Sortti Stations. The reception is free of charge during January. See the sorting instructions for Christmas trees on property.
Spring
- Store the grit from the winter and reuse it, or take it away using a transport skip. Smaller batches can be delivered to Sortti Stations subject to a charge. Ground grit does not belong in mixed waste collection as it cannot be utilised in a waste-to-energy plant. Grit easily makes the waste container too heavy as well. A heavy container is an occupational safety risk for the garbage truck driver and can also damage the transport equipment.
- HSY’s touring collection vehicles tour in the Helsinki metropolitan area and Kirkkonummi. Electric and electronic equipment, scrap metal and hazardous waste can be delivered to the vehicles free of charge.
Summer
- Trim any overgrown shrubs and trees along the driveways to the property’s waste collection points. If it is not safe for garbage trucks to reverse into yards, waste containers may not be emptied at all. The driveway must be at least 3.5 metres wide and 4 metres high.
- Be sure to pack biowaste well: carefully packaged biowaste reduces odour nuisance and prevents the waste container from getting dirty.
- Remember that barbecue charcoal can be placed in the mixed waste container only after it has cooled down completely. The metal parts of a disposable grill belong in the metal collection.
- Summer is a good time to take care of any changes and repairs that need to made to the property’s waste collection point. Remove items that do not belong at the waste collection point and make sure that the space is not used as storage for other things.
Autumn
- Collect garden waste, leaves, branches and brushwood as a separate load, for example, onto a transport skip that you have ordered; only sort reasonable amounts into mixed waste and biowaste containers.
- During the autumn season, Sortti Stations accept apples and other garden fruit for the price of garden waste. Only sort small amounts into the property’s biowaste or mixed waste containers to prevent them from becoming too heavy to move and lift.
- Remove any visual obstructions as well as shrubs and branches impeding the movement of the garbage truck from the accessway so that the garbage truck has enough space to turn around as well.
- Lubricate and maintain the lock and key container of the property’s waste collection point before freezing weather arrives.
