HSY’s collection vehicles will tour again in April–May

News releases 14.03.2022, 14:32

Helsinki Region Environmental Services’ collection vehicles will again tour in central residential areas to collect domestic hazardous waste, scrap metal and electrical and electronic devices free of charge. The tour, including twelve collection vehicles, will begin on Monday, 4 April, and will be touring in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and Kirkkonummi for nine weeks. The last collection day is 6 June.

Again this spring, HSY’s collection vehicles will be touring in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, collecting domestic hazardous waste, scrap metal and disused electrical and electronic devices from residents. The traditional spring tour had to be cancelled in the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic; however, it was organised successfully in autumn 2020.

The tour will begin from Helsinki and Espoo on 4 April and from Kauniainen on 25 April. The tour will proceed to Vantaa on 5 May and to Kirkkonummi on 31 May. The exact reception sites and times are available on HSY’s collection vehicles website.

“The tour stops at nearly 300 reception sites, so there will certainly be a suitable location for all residents to take household waste that is produced less frequently. You can easily find the nearest reception site with the search tool on ourwebsite,” says Marjut Mäntynen, Operations Manager at HSY.

The collection vehicles only accept electrical and electronic devices, metal scrap and hazardous waste from households.

“Hazardous waste includes paints, varnishes and mortars, corrosive chemicals, batteries, engine oil, solvents and petrol. Everyday products such as hairspray, nail polish and perfume are also dangerous as waste,” Mäntynen continues.

You can find your closest reception site and waste types suitable for collection at HSY Collection vehicle's page. For sorting assistance, you can also turn to HSY’s waste guide and the environmental advisor at the reception site. Metal waste and electrical and electronic devices collected by the vehicles will be recycled as raw materials for new products. Hazardous waste is rendered harmless during processing, but some of it can also be recycled.

The free collection service is particularly useful for those without a car

Domestic hazardous waste, electrical and electronic devices and scrap metal are collected by different collection vehicles. We recommend you sort your waste already at home to ensure that everything runs smoothly at the reception site. Larger quantities of waste have to be taken directly to Sortti Stations, which accept the same waste types free of charge.

“The service is primarily intended for residents without a car, which is why the collection vehicles do not accept considerable quantities of waste, such astrailer loads. If you arrive by car, please park further away as there will be 5–6 trucks at the reception site at the same time. The items must be handed over when the vehicles are on site - do not leave items at the site before the vehicles arrive,” Mäntynen notes.

The goal of the collection vehicle service is to make recycling easier by bringing a collection point closer to homes. The free service has proved to be popular among residents.

“During the exceptional time in autumn 2020, more than 12,300 residents used the collection vehicle service, dropping off a total of around 200,000 kilos of waste for recycling,” Mäntynen says.

The spring tour of the collection vehicles will be carried out taking into account health and safety. The vehicles will accept waste at each reception site for a period of 30-40 minutes, allowing everyone who wishes to use the service to bring their items without hurry while maintaining safe distances.
