Where can you find air quality information?

You can check the current air quality

You can also monitor the air quality from the news screens of metros and trams, as well as on TV on the Ylen aamu morning broadcast on weekdays. The morning radio broadcasts of Radio Helsinki and Ylen aikainen also occasionally report the air quality that morning. You can check the air quality of the previous weekday afternoon from the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper.

If the air quality deteriorates sharply, we will inform residents without delay. The cities of the region are responsible for recommendations and measures.

Air quality as open data and geographic information

Air quality monitoring results are also available in HSY’s open data service at hsy.fi/avoindata. On the open data page, you can download and save the material to your own computer by clicking on the name of the material.

Open data in geographic information format is available in the open data map service kartta.hsy.fi. The materials can be viewed directly in the browser and downloaded to your own computer from the area of your choice. The air quality map materials are in the ETRS-GK25 (EPSG: 3879) coordinate system and the downloadable vectors are in .shp format. The service works best with the Chrome browser. Instructions for using the map service can be found in the service. Real-time air quality information (Air quality now) is also available in the map service as open data.

The material is updated hourly. It can be accessed or downloaded directly from the server via interfaces using the following WMS and WFS interface addresses:
https://kartta.hsy.fi/geoserver/ilmanlaatu/wms
https://kartta.hsy.fi/geoserver/ilmanlaatu/wfs

Via the interfaces, real-time air quality information can be found by entering the open interface address above in your own application and retrieving the Air quality_now level from there. More information about using interfaces. In matters related to open data, please contact avoindata@hsy.fi.

Real-time air quality information in machine-readable format

HSY publishes the results of air quality monitoring points as required by the INSPIRE implementation through the Finnish Meteorological Institute http://ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/avoin-data. Air quality is monitored continuously and in real time at nearly a hundred sites across Finland. The required measurements are defined in legislation and are the responsibility of cities and industrial plants in their respective territories, as well as of the Finnish Meteorological Institute.  The Finnish Meteorological Institute has made the air quality observations of air quality monitoring in Finland open on behalf of municipalities.
