Idling reduces air quality

Cars idling in traffic

Avoid unnecessary running of the car, as it pollutes the air for no reason. The idling of new cars as well still has an impact on the breathing air in the immediate vicinity of the car. Idling also increases noise and greenhouse gas emissions that are harmful to the climate. The adverse effect on air quality is accentuated in freezing weather with little wind. In sub-zero temperatures, the air can stand still without mixing, and the cloud of exhaust gases will be a nuisance for passers-by for a long time.

Exhaust gas contains substances that are harmful to health and the environment. Inhaling exhaust gas causes headaches, irritation of the mucous membranes, and burning of the eyes. Exhaust gas can cause severe respiratory symptoms for the elderly, children and allergy sufferers, especially in freezing winter weather.

You are allowed to run your engine idle for a maximum of two minutes before driving. When the temperature is -15°C or below, you are allowed to run your engine idle for a maximum of four minutes before driving. In addition, the engine may be kept running before starting off or beginning to work on a vehicle or machine for the time necessary to prepare the vehicle or machine for operation. Unnecessary idling of vehicles is monitored by police and parking attendants. (Road Traffic Act 729/2018 55§).
