Pitäjänmäki-Marttila water network renovation

The water network will be renovated in the area of Pitäjänmäki, Marttila, and parts of Reimarla in 2021–2022. The contractor is Terrawise Oy.

Renovation project

We are renovating the water network in the area of Pitäjänmäki, Marttila, and parts of Reimarla in Helsinki.

The trunk network to be renovated includes water pipes, wastewater sewers and stormwater sewers for which HSY is responsible. In addition, we will renovate all the properties’ lot water pipes and lot sewers that are over 20 years old from the trunk network up to the border of the lot. The exception being the 20–30-year-old plot pipeline running in the public street area, the renovation of which can, upon the property owner’s request, be left undone with certain special conditions.

In connection with the project, HSY will also have stormwater main sewers built in the areas that still lack them. The majority of the area being renovated already has stormwater main sewers.

The estimated implementation phase is 2021–2022, and the contractor is Terrawise Oy.

The water network in the area to be renovated was built mainly from the 1950s to the 1970s. HSY has approximately 11 kilometres of water pipe and approximately 10 kilometres of wastewater and stormwater networks in the area. There have been disruptions, faults, and water quality problems in the water network.

There are approximately 350 water supply customer connections in the area. We estimate that the lot water pipes and sewers of the properties are from the same period as HSY’s trunk network. There are similar faults and disturbances associated with the pipes of the properties.

The map shows the area to be renovated (updated 20 May 2020).

We are testing a new operating model in regional renovation

In the Pitäjänmäki-Marttila water network project, we are testing a new operating model with four key objectives:

1. repairing the water pipe, wastewater sewer and stormwater sewer networks of the entire defined area in one go;
2. offering property owners an affordable way to also renovate the lot lines in the area of their own property in connection with the project;
3. the contractor is responsible for connecting the renovated lot lines to the new network in cooperation with HSY; and
4. implementing communications in close cooperation with the contractor, communicating to residents in a multi-channel manner.
