HSY's climate work
Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) is working, together with the cities of the metropolitan area, to mitigate climate change in order to achieve the jointly approved objectives of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area climate strategy to the year 2030. This work focuses on promoting and monitoring the implementation of the strategy, and reporting on the progress of the approved measures. Moreover, HSY has a strong focus on adaptation to climate change. Helsinki Metropolitan Area Climate Change Adaptation Strategy was prepared in 2012.
HSY assesses the greenhouse gas emission trends and various other climate indicators, as well as monitors the implementation of the climate strategy in terms of mitigation measures carried out in the cities of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. It annually publishes reviews of the progress in climate work. Indicators for monitoring adaptation to climate change are being developed.
To implement the climate strategies, HSY is involved in various international, national and metropolitan level projects. Methods of calculating greenhouse gas emissions are improved to enhance the impact assessment and the international comparability of findings. A climate seminar is arranged yearly to discuss the latest research findings and the outlook for mitigating and adapting to climate change. Also, HSY strives for setting an example by cutting its own greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, promoting renewable energy and maintaining preparedness for the impacts of climate change.
