Material efficiency means improving the material usage by producing more with less. Material efficiency stands high in a circular economy. Waste generation is minimised, raw materials circulate and non-renewable natural resources are replaced by renewable resources. Products are designed to be recycled and reused.
Households and the public sector have good possibilities to influence the promotion of material efficiency and circular economy by reducing consumption, purchasing sustainable products, and by minizing the amount of waste.
The efficient use of materials and utilisation of waste as material are instruments used for mitigating climate change and also mentioned in the Climate Strategy for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area to 2030.
