Sustainable urban living programme

Our current way of life consumes a lot of natural resources and causes emissions that warm the climate and degrade the quality of the air we breathe. It must be possible to reverse this development if we are to give our children the opportunity for a safe and healthy planet. The Helsinki metropolitan area has started engaging in vigorous climate and resource wisdom efforts: cities have set ambitious carbon neutrality targets, and programmes to implement them.
Cooperation between cities and with other parties is also necessary to meet the climate challenge. Residents need to be inspired to reduce the emissions from their consumption.
To this end, HSY has prepared during 2019 – 2021 the Sustainable Urban Living Programme for the Helsinki metropolitan area. The programme proposes measures to be implemented together with the metropolitan cities, public organisations, companies and residents by 2030.
The programme is based on HSY's vision to together make the Helsinki metropolitan area the most sustainable urban area in the world. Themes include climate change mitigation, circular economy and adaptation to a warming climate. The programme promotes choices guiding the lives of city residents in a direction that would allow global warming to be halted at 1.5°C.
