Mobility and traffic

Traffic amounts to 24% of the carbon dioxide emissions in the Helsinki region. You may reduce your own carbon dioxide emissions by choosing biking, walking or public transport instead of private motoring. Biking and walking are the most eco-friendly means of mobile exercise, and they also improve your health and save money. Train, metro and tram are the best options for public transport.

Journey planner carbon dioxide calculator

A calculator has been added to the public transport Journey Planner, indicating the greenhouse gas emissions from the different means of transport provided by the guide. In comparison, the calculator also indicates the emissions generated by using a passenger car for the same distance.

Chocolate counter tells you your energy consumption

The carbon dioxide counter also has a chocolate counter calculating the amount of calories that would be consumed by walking or biking the same distance. The calculator visualises the amount of calories by indicating how much chocolate it corresponds to.

The Jälki calculator tracks your weekday travel emissions

HSL’ s new weekday travel carbon calculator – Jälki – works out the carbon dioxide emissions from your weekday (Mon–Fri) travel. To calculate the emissions from your weekday travel, estimate the number of kilometres travelled by each mode of transport or enter your departure and destination address in the search boxes.

Emissions from public transport are calculated per passenger. Those who travel by car are asked to specify the number of passengers. The calculator also takes into account the age and size of the car, as well as the fuel used.
