Transport
Traffic emissions and resident transport patterns
Transport causes 24 percent of all carbon emissions in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. The Julia 2030 -project is encouraging residents to choose the best modes of mobility for climate control. Calculators are currently being developed to provide guidance so that residents can select the optimal transportation modes for combating climate change. These calculators should come into service in 2010-2011.
The source data for all calculators will be based on previous research into traffic emissions. The Julia 2030 -project is also reviewing example districts in various parts of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area with varying access to public transport connections. Transport emissions in these districts will be studied using traffic models and an assessment method developed by the Technical Research Centre of Finland – VTT.

Promoting walking and cycling
One aim of the Julia 2030 -project is to emphasise that walking and cycling promote health while reducing greenhouse gas emissions from mobility.
The final stages of the project will investigate whether the transportation patterns of residents have changed during the project to favour more climate-friendly modes of mobility.
