The climate calculator – an effective tool for motivating a workforce
The climate calculator is a tool developed by WWF Finland for assessing the greenhouse gas emissions of offices. Precise data on energy and paper consumption, staff mobility, goods transport, paper purchases, waste generated and emission compensations may be fed into the calculator, which then reckons the associated carbon dioxide emissions for each of these quantities.
This version of climate calculator is fully equipped to use only Finnish data because it is based on Finnish national emission factors.
WWF Green Office establishments use this calculator to assess their emissions, but the tool is freely available online and may also be used for other kinds of operation. The information provided by the climate calculator is an effective resource for motivating the staff of a workplace and the users of a building.
The climate calculator was further improved during 2009 and 2010 in association with WWF as part of the Julia 2030 -project. The new climate calculator now reckons the greenhouse gas emissions arising from waste processing and transportation more precisely. Its built-in coefficients were formulated jointly by an extensive team of specialists. The Finnish Environment Institute contributed to this process by formulating greenhouse gas emission coefficients for various types of waste.
Highlighting the findings of cost monitoring
The calculator now also incorporates annual cost monitoring for consumption of electricity and district heating, paper purchases and waste processing. This feature can be used to highlight such aspects as financial savings achieved by reducing paper consumption.
