The Jälki footprint calculator works out the carbon dioxide emissions from your weekday travel
Take the test: are you a Climate Guru or a Footprint Monster?
HSL’ s new weekday travel carbon calculator Jälki works out the carbon dioxide emissions from your weekday (Mon–Fri) travel. You can find the calculator at www.hsl.fi/jälki. To calculate the emissions from your weekday travel, estimate the number of kilometres travelled by each mode of transport or enter your departure and destination address in the search boxes.
The calculator takes into account emissions from fuel consumption by buses and cars as well as emissions from electricity consumption by rail transport. Carbon dioxide emissions are given as CO2 equivalents, i.e., the impact of other greenhouse gases has been converted to correspond to the climate impact of carbon dioxide.
Emissions from public transport are calculated per passenger. Those who travel by car are asked to specify the number of passengers. The calculator also takes into account the age and size of the car, as well as the fuel used.
Compare your results with your “neighbour”
The calculator also asks for your age, gender, residential area, form of housing and access to a car. On the basis of this information, the calculator will identify a control person. The control person information has been retrieved from HSL’s extensive travel survey, which examined how much and by which modes of transport the residents of the Helsinki region commuting area travel.
In the result section, the calculator tells you your carbon dioxide emissions in kilograms and also lets you know which of the following five categories you belong to: Climate Guru, Virtuous Wanderer, Average Ambler, Bigfoot or Footprint Monster. You can also compare your results with those of a control person from your own residential area.
The calculator also tells you how to reduce your footprint
The Jälki calculator, developed as part of the Julia 2030 project, gives you tips on how to reduce your carbon dioxide emissions. Motorists are advised to switch to ride-sharing and public transport. Public transport users get information on, for example, HSL’s mobile services that help them plan their journeys wherever they are. You can also share your results on Facebook and submit a promise to reduce emissions. The promises are shown at the bottom of the calculator.
Julia 2030, Mitigation of and Adaptation to the Climate Change in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, is a joint project of HSY Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority, Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo, Kauniainen, Kirkkonummi, Kerava, the Finnish Environment Institute and HSL. The project is co-ordinated by HSY Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority. Development of the Jälki calculator has received support from the EU’s Life programme (Life07 EN/FIN/000145).
