Journey Planner calculates carbon emissions and calorie consumption

HSL’s Journey Planner now not only shows you the route to take but also calculates carbon emissions produced by your travel. The calculator shows next to the route suggestions and tells the emissions for the chosen route and mode of transport. The carbon calculator compares emissions from travel by public transport to emissions from travel by car. 

The calculator takes into account emissions produced by buses and cars during the drive, and emissions generated by power production for electrically operated transport modes. Emissions from car travel are calculated under the assumption that there is one person per car. If there are more than one person in a car, the emissions per person are calculated by dividing the amount of emissions with the number of passengers in the car. 

On the "Further information page" you can also see annual carbon dioxide emission for the chosen route and mode of transport. The table shows how much you can reduce emissions if you choose cycling, walking or public transport instead of driving. The page also provides information on calculation methods used for each mode of travel. 

Journey Planner tells you how many calories you burn during your journey

In addition to emissions the calculator also calculates your energy consumption which is expressed in kilocalories and as pieces of chocolate. The calculator takes into account walking included in travel by public transport and calculates calorie consumption from walking. The calculator also calculates calorie consumption for journeys made by foot or bike.

Energy consumption is calculated for a 70 kg person so that cycling burns 25 kilocalories per kilometre and walking 50 kilocalories per kilometre. One piece of chocolate (10 g) is estimated to have 52 kcal. The “chocolate calculator” will be incorporated also in the Journey Planner for Cycling later this summer. 

The Journey Planner’s carbon calculator has been developed as part of Julia 2030 climate project which aims to reduce green house gas emissions in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The project receives funding from the EU LIFE+ program.
