The first meeting of Vantaa eco-support staff was held on Tuesday, the 1st of June at Vernissa in Tikkurila. Eco-support activity in Vantaa began in March 2009 and it is a part of Julia 2030 -project coordinated by HSY.
About 100 people are part of the Vantaa eco-support network. They have been educated for the task and now in their turn educate their co-workers about recycling and other environmental issues.
- The idea behind eco-support afternoon was for the staff to get to know each other and to exchange ideas how to promote environmental issues at their individual work places, explains Siikström.
Small changes make a big difference
In his opening statement, the Mayor of Vantaa, Mr. Juhani Paajanen emphasized the importance of environmental issues for the city. He also had a clear vision how the environmental issues should be advanced in the city administration.
- Environmental protection begins with the smallest things, and sensible solutions are usually also very simple solutions, said Paajanen.
The afternoon was successful with people exchanging opinions and experiences. Marjut Lahtela from the Myyrmäki public library had a talk about changes made at her work place. A significant change in energy consumption was achieved simply by turning on the library computers only when the library is open to the public and the computers were at use.
The participants had also paid attention to paper consumption and printing at their work places. Unfortunately many still lacked the possiblity for two-sided printing.

The Mayor of the city of Vantaa, Mr. Juhani Paajanen opened the afternoon with his speech.

Marjut Lahtela of Myyrmäki public library told about changes made at her workplace.
