Environmental protection is an integral part of HSY's core operations and basic tasks. Environmental issues are considered in a variety of ways: the energy consumption of water management is reduced in all areas and the safety and comfort of the environment are taken into consideration in all of the network's construction and repair work. We also strive to assess the impacts of the climate change. Wastewater treatment is an important part of the municipal federation's environmental efforts. The wastewater is cleaned efficiently and then conveyed to the sea and returned to the natural cycle. The by-products and energy generated in the cleaning process are utilised as efficiently as possible. The sludge is composted for use in landscaping, and the treatment plants are largely self-sufficient in terms of heat and electricity. The aim is to reduce the wastewater load and minimise its harmful impacts. To protect all affected water systems, and the Baltic Sea in particular, HSY constantly strives to achieve better treatment results. Our wastewater treatment plants do not settle for meeting the purification requirements but aim to develop more and more efficient treatment processes. The environmental know-how of the wastewater service providers is recognised as first-class also internationally. Purification requirements have been set forth for wastewater treatment. Treatment results and environmental impacts are monitored and controlled by the environmental centres of the individual cities and the Uusimaa Regional Environment Centre.
