Waste Management of Properties
HSY's waste management organises the collections and transportation of unsorted waste, biowaste and energy fractions for residential properties and public services throughout the metropolitan area (Espoo, Helsinki, Kauniainen, Vantaa) and Kirkkonummi.
The transportation services for other wastes, such as paper and recyclable cardboard, have to be resolved directly with other private transportation companies. Business enterprises must organise the management of their own waste.
According to the waste management regulation of the metropolitan area, a building property is responsible for organising a biowaste collection, provided that the property comprises at least ten apartments or generates biowaste of more than 50 kg per week. Residential properties must collect recyclable cardboard, if the property includes at least 20 apartments or if over 50 kg of recyclable cardboard waste is produced per week. According to the regulations, it is not allowed to dispose of recyclable paper among unsorted waste.
The aim is for smaller building properties to compost their biowaste. HSY provides guidelines for composting purposes, in order to encourage the composting activities.
HSY lays the general waste management regulations which are in force within the metropolitan area. These regulations apply to all properties throughout the area. The regulations concern, among others, the waste fractions that have to be collected separately, as well as the requirements set for the collection procedure, collection means, waste bin units and waste transportations. The waste management regulations are meant to specify the general principles of the waste management set by the Waste Act.
The price list of HSY contains the prices for waste transportations and waste treatment, which are charged from the customer properties, as well as prices charged at the reception stations.
