Take your garden waste
to the HSY Sortti stations

It is worthwhile composting the garden waste ensuing from the spring cleaning in your own garden. If this is not possible, take your garden waste to one of the Sortti stations run by the Helsinki Region Environment Services Authority. By doing this, your garden waste will be composted and not end up among unsorted waste at the landfill. Do not dispose of any garden waste in woods or parks.

A load of garden waste or brushwood brought to one of the Sortti stations with a passenger car, van or trailer costs five euros. Brushwood must be sorted out from the other garden waste as twigs and cut or broken off tree branches will be chipped before composting.

Soil and rootstalks are not garden waste

Leaves, grass, plant tops and chipped brushwood are garden waste. Twigs, sprigs, branches, coniferous litter, hawthorn and individual trees, which have a diameter less than 20 cm, are classified as brushwood.

Soiled roots, rootstalks and stumps, as well as soil and other extractable soil resources, cannot be disposed of in the brushwood and garden waste collections.

The busiest time at the stations is Mondays

Almost 200 000 customer visits were recorded at HSY’s Sortti stations last year. Most of these visits were made to the Sortti station at Kivikko, where some 500 customers were recorded daily.

The customer numbers at the Sortti stations will increase remarkably once spring cleaning and renovations start. The busiest time is on Mondays, at around five o’clock. If possible, it may be advisable to visit the stations at some other time than these aforementioned hours.

The Munkinmäki waste station in Kirkkonummi does not accept any garden waste or brushwood, due to the lack of available space.

The Sortti stations practice self-service operations; in other words, the customers must unload the delivery vehicles themselves and lift the wastes into the respective collection containers. The means of payments include bank, credit or payment cards. Cash is not accepted.

Sortti stations are open on 7.5., 14.5. and 21.5.

Sortti stations serve their customers on weekdays, from 7:00 to 21:00. The stations are also open in the spring on three Saturdays: 7.5., 14.5. and 21.5., 9:00–16:00.

Sortti stations are located in:

  • Espoo, the waste treatment centre at Ämmässuo, Ämmässuontie 8
  • Helsinki, Kivikko, Kivikonlaita 5
  • Helsinki, Konala, Betonitie 3
  • Kirkkonummi, Munkinmäki waste station at Munkinmäki, Munkinmäentie 3 (does not accept any garden waste)
