Environment
The state of the environment at the Ämmässuo waste treatment centre is carefully monitored. The objective is to systematically reduce environmental hazards, which arise from the waste treatment. The HSY Waste management compiles statistics, among others, in regard to the waste amounts received at the landfill sites and other information concerning operations related to the waste management.
Vantaa Energy Ltd will erect a waste-power plant in Vantaa during 2011-2014. Additional information concerning the project and its environmental impact is provided on these pages.
Management of the Environmental, Quality and Occupation Safety Issues
The management of the environmental, quality and occupational safety issues is an essential part of the operations of HSY. The most important aim is to secure the waste management in the metropolitan area, so that the detrimental health and environmental effects, caused by wastes, will be minimized and, thus, help to maintain the region as an attractive urban area.
The primary objective is to reduce the amount of waste at source. The wastes are to be source-separated and forwarded for recycling when possible. Waste which is unsuitable for reclamation purposes will be treated in such a way, which is considered to be the best from the environmental aspect, as well as most reasonable from a technical and economical point of view.
The quality targets of the operational waste management are mainly focused on waste collections, transportations and treatment, as well as on the planning of these operations and promoting of the best practices within the waste management. The waste management services must comply with the demands and expectations of the customers and secure the operations of the entire service chain, also including the quality of its internal operations and the collaborations with sub-contractors.
The aim of the occupational health and safety issues is to secure the different tasks of the waste management in a safe and professional way. The fulfilment of this objective is attempted by paying special attention to the safety of working conditions and working methods, as well as through training and priming.
The environmental, quality and occupational health and occupational safety aspects must be taken into consideration when selecting the subcontractors who participate in the various tasks of the waste management, as well as when controlling and monitoring the entire operation of the waste management.
Special attention must be paid to the environmental impact of the operations of the HSY waste treatment centre. An annual report concerning the state of the environment and the quality of the operations will be published as part of the annual report by the HSY Waste management.
HSY's waste management holds a certified (ISO 14001 and ISO 9001) operational system, which includes environmental, quality and occupational safety issues. An environmental certificate has been granted to HSY's waste management since 1997 and a quality certificate since 1999. Inspecta Sertifiointi Oy audited the environmental and quality system last time in May 2010.
