Commuting to the Helsinki Metropolitan Area
The practice of commuting to work in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area has increased rapidly in recent years. The Helsinki Metropolitan Area commuting zone already extends to a radius of about two hundred kilometres from the centre of the region. HSY (formerly YTV) compiles an annual review of commuting into the Helsinki Metropolitan Area based on the latest statistics broken down by municipalities. The information is based on employment statistics prepared by Statistics Finland.

HSY also monitors changes in commuting patterns based on the Labour force survey. The data for this survey are based on sampling, and therefore cannot be analysed to yield findings by individual municipality. The commuting figures obtained from employment statistics and the Labour force survey diverge slightly, as can be seen in the latter diagram on this page.
