Air quality in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area
Air quality is monitored in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area by measuring the concentrations of different size particles and gaseous pollutants.The air quality situation is updated hourly on the HSY website. The results may be viewed either by measuring station or by contaminant.
HSY monitors air quality in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area at 11 measuring stations. These measuring stations are in various types of environments, and they help to provide a comprehensive impression of urban air quality. Their results can be used to assess air quality in similar areas.
The most important urban air pollutants for human health are fine particles and ozone. The principal atmospheric pollution emission sources in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area are traffic, energy production and the small scale wood burning. Air pollutants are also long range transported to Finland from abroad.
